  3. An effective writer needs to be able to really express their emotions in their writing. The best writers are the ones who make you want to cry along when you read their tragedy or laugh along to their comedy. The text should be clear in meaning. It should also be interesting. Writers must be willing to let their writing be very personal, because what you write must mean something to you before it will mean something to someone else.

  7. (Scene: A reporter sits across from an old man. The reporter turns a tape recorder on and the man leans back in his chair.)

Reporter: Considering you’ve been in the business for thirty years or so, what does it mean to be an effective writer?

Man: I’m an editor, I’m not supposed to know these things. (Laughs) But you’ve to relate to the audience, you have to get their attention, and draw them in. And when you do, you have to leave them either wanting more, or critically thinking about what they’ve just read.

Reporter: What does this have to do with the words you choose?

Man: That all depends on what you’re writing. You can’t be writing about King Arthur, and make reference to JFK. I just don’t work. You got to relate to your characters in a way so your audience can. Using the proper language to achieve this, may be difficult, but must be down with such qualities.

    Reporter: What qualities?

Man: Well, of course, grammar and language you use. You want to capture readers’ attention with interesting vocabulary, then again you don’t want to bore them to death. It all deals with your personal qualities, I suppose.

    Reporter: How so?

Man: Everyone has something new to offer to the field of literature, and so one must not force themselves into a mold, especially not one I set. Be free to write however you like because somewhere out there someone will listen and appreciate your work.
